Archetypal & Symbolic Inquiry

Listening to what has appeared

Archetypes are recurring patterns and figures within human experience. They appear in mythology and storytelling, but may also arise through dreams, relationships, creative expression and the circumstances that repeatedly shape our lives.

Digital adaptation of Gaia Sigel’s mixed-media artwork The Hierophant: a horned human face in layered charcoal, teal and earth colours. Beside it are the words, I do not want to explain the image away. I would rather continue listening to it.

I do not want to explain the image away.
I would rather continue listening to it.

— Gaia Sigel
The Hierophant, 2013 · The archetypal priest of natureDigital website adaptation developed from an original mixed-media artwork by Gaia Sigel.

In archetypal inquiry, we do not impose a fixed meaning upon an image or tell its maker what it represents.

We remain in relationship with what has appeared—attending to what attracts us, unsettles us or seems to carry more meaning than we can immediately explain.

Through art processes, mythological storytelling and shared reflection, we explore how a personal image may open into a larger human pattern. The intention is not to claim an archetypal identity, but to listen, discern and bring what is discovered back into daily life with humility and responsibility.

Questions we may bring

Why has this image appeared now?

What part of my life does it illuminate?

What responsibility arises from what I have encountered?

My approach

The mythic portion of life

Individual therapy service in professional preparation

My approach has developed through sustained engagement with transpersonal studies, creative process, mythological storytelling, archetypal exploration and symbolic inquiry.

Through art-making, embodied reflection, open conversation and shared inquiry, we explore what I call the mythic portion of life—the deeper patterns, images and stories moving beneath our ordinary experience.

My role is not to impose an interpretation or tell someone what an image means. I hold a carefully considered space in which each person can encounter their own imagery, recognise what carries meaning for them and discover how it relates to the way they are living, relating and meeting the world.

This work invites innerstanding: not knowledge gathered only through the intellect, but an understanding discovered inwardly through image, emotion, body, story and lived experience.

My approach brings ancient mythology and the transpersonal arts into a living relationship with contemporary life. It supports emotional honesty, authentic expression and a more conscious relationship with the forces that shape us.

What is discovered within the work must eventually return with us into daily life—into our relationships, our choices and the responsibilities through which insight becomes embodied.

The facilitator

Gaia Sigel

Transpersonal arts practitioner, group facilitator and mythopoetic practitioner.

Gaia has more than fifteen years of experience in experiential, creative and transpersonal practice. His involvement in this work began in 2008 and has continued through transpersonal study, individual creative process, men’s work and transformative group facilitation.

His practice draws upon transpersonal art therapy training, mythology, archetypal inquiry and symbolic amplification. His approach moves from orientation, through relationship and surrender, towards a responsible return to daily life.

Soul Metaphors offers a meeting place between personal experience, archetypal psychology and the living language of story.

Words from participants

Reflections from those who have entered the work

Gaia is extremely warm in his delivery. His consideration of process creates a deep sense of safety, allowing group members to go further—to reveal, reflect and heal.

With deep understanding, one is invited into deeper reflection. There is a certain genius at play in his work and a true sense of sacred consciousness, healing and integration. A true gem in Adelaide’s workshop landscape—not to be missed.

Ciara Savage

Gaia is a warrior poet who walks between worlds. He has access to places I didn’t know existed and has assisted me in healing pain I didn’t know I carried.

If you want to transform destructive traits and become gentler and more generative, Gaia is your man.

Brett Waller

Gaia has an encyclopedic knowledge of myths and, through his intuition, is able to offer what is required. The work I undertook with Gaia over the course of a day changed my life.

Through incredibly well-timed and poignant questions, he prompted me to consider alternative perspectives on issues that had negatively ruled my life. He introduced me to my shadow, helped me identify the source of my anger and supported me in developing ways of managing it.

I will always be grateful for his knowledge, guidance and wisdom.

Hurricane Bestman

Gaia has a unique ability to create and hold space. Through the lessons, insights and wisdom he shared, I was able to discover new perspectives and gain access to a previously unknown part of myself.

I gained the knowledge I needed to advance upon my soul’s journey. His support changed my life for the better. I feel blessed and deeply grateful for his guidance.

I highly recommend experiencing what Gaia has to offer.
