Individual Transpersonal Art Therapy

Creative pathways towards self-understanding and change.

There are times when the ways we have learned to meet life no longer seem to work. We may find ourselves repeating familiar patterns, standing at the threshold of change or sensing that something within us is asking for greater attention.

Who this work is for

A threshold has been reached.

Something in the way you have been living, relating, working or understanding yourself no longer seems to hold.

Life may not have fallen apart, yet an inner unease has begun to ask for attention. The old answers are no longer sufficient, and another way forward has not yet become clear.

You may be:

  • moving through a significant personal or life transition
  • encountering a pattern that continues to repeat despite your efforts to change it
  • questioning how you meet yourself, other people and the wider world
  • experiencing a loss of direction, meaning or creative movement
  • carrying a question that cannot be resolved through thought alone
  • drawn towards the meaning within a recurring image, dream, relationship or life experience
  • seeking a deeper relationship with your own emotional, symbolic or spiritual life

This work is suited to adults who are willing to participate actively in their own inquiry. It does not provide prescribed answers or tell you how your life should be lived. It offers a place in which to slow down, become curious and encounter what may be seeking expression through conversation, image, colour, metaphor and the body.

You do not need artistic ability. You need only a willingness to make a mark, remain with a question and listen to what begins to emerge.

The work is not intended for immediate crisis intervention or for someone seeking diagnosis or directive advice. It is for those who are ready to explore their own patterns, discover their own responses and carry what they learn back into the living relationships of everyday life.

The approach

Meaning is discovered, not imposed.

Individual Transpersonal Art Therapy offers a carefully held space in which to explore life through therapeutic conversation, drawing, imagery, symbolic inquiry and personal reflection.

My role is a careful combination of therapist, facilitator, witness, guide and companion. I listen, observe and ask questions that may help you encounter your own responses more clearly. I do not offer prescribed answers or tell you what decisions to make.

This approach has been shaped through more than fifteen years of experiential, creative and transpersonal practice, beginning in 2008, together with sustained involvement in transformative group work, mythology, archetypal inquiry and symbolic process.

An image is never treated as a fixed diagnosis. Its colours, forms and placement may guide our questions, but its meaning is not assigned from outside. Your experience and associations remain central.

The intention is not to create dependence upon the practitioner. It is to strengthen your capacity to recognise your patterns, engage your own symbolic life and develop practices that you can continue beyond the therapy room.

When words are not enough

The blank page becomes a doorway.

A process may begin with one simple question:

Where am I today?

You may be invited to spend five minutes making an image on an A3 page with chalk pastels or other accessible materials. Chalk pastel can form a sharp line, a soft layer, dense colour or a broad field that can be blended and changed. It gives the hand—and sometimes the body—more than one way to speak.

When the drawing is complete, you may be invited to describe what you see, notice what draws your attention or enter into a dialogue with something that has appeared. Significant words and discoveries can be recorded in your personal journal or on the reverse of the image.

Questions we may bring

What led you to place it there?

What does this colour mean to you?

What stands out when you hold the image before you?

If this form could speak, what might it say?

What changes when you imagine the image moving?

What remains unknown?

The shape of a 90-minute session

Arrival, inquiry, integration and return.

Arrival

Time to settle, become comfortable and speak about how you are arriving.

Orientation

Clarifying what you need and what you hope to explore within the session.

Inquiry

Conversation, drawing, image-making or a deeper sequence of symbolic reflection.

Return

Gathering what has emerged and returning grounded to the ordinary world.

If grief, strong emotion or bodily memory arises, appropriate grounding practices may be used—with your knowledge and consent—to support a conscious return to the present.

Before closing, we consider what the session has revealed and identify one or two questions or practices you may wish to carry into the following days.

The three-session transpersonal pathway

Enough time for the work to find its ground.

For deeper individual work, I recommend beginning with three 90-minute sessions. This gives the process continuity without creating an open-ended commitment.

01

Orientation

We explore what has brought you, what you hope may change and whether this therapeutic approach is suited to your needs.

02

Encounter

As familiarity and trust develop, the work may begin to open through conversation, drawing and symbolic inquiry.

03

Integration and Direction

We gather what has emerged, recognise what may require further attention and consider what comes next.

At the end of the third session, we review the work together. You may have received enough to continue independently, or you may recognise that further exploration would be valuable. Further sessions are arranged only when there is a clear purpose.

Sessions may be held weekly, fortnightly or at another mutually agreed interval according to your circumstances and the needs of the work.

Your personal journal

A record of the path you have travelled.

A dedicated journal provides a place to gather drawings, written reflections, questions, dreams, discoveries and changes arising during and between sessions.

You may bring a suitable journal of your own or request one to be provided. Your journal and artwork remain entirely yours. A preparation list will be provided before the first session. Paper, chalk pastels and charcoal are provided for in-person creative processes.

Session options and intended fees

A clear beginning.

Payment will ordinarily be made when booking unless another arrangement has been agreed beforehand.

No charge

Complimentary introductory conversation

A brief phone or video conversation to speak about what has brought you, ask questions and consider whether working together feels appropriate. This is not a therapy or crisis-support session, and there is no obligation to continue.

  • Reduced-fee 90-minute session$135

Reduced-fee places are offered according to individual circumstances and the capacity of the practice. They are not automatically available as a discounted three-session pathway.

In person and online

One practice, held through two forms.

In Adelaide

In-person sessions are intended to be held in private consulting rooms within selected Adelaide wellness centres. Confirmed location and access information will be provided when appointments open.

Online

Online sessions will be available through a secure video platform. You will need a private, undisturbed space, your journal and the materials identified in the preparation list. Sessions will not be recorded.

Professional care and boundaries

The container is part of the work.

Confidentiality and ownership

What you share and create is treated with care and confidentiality, subject to legal and safety limitations explained before the first session.

Your artwork and journal remain yours. They will not be photographed, reproduced or used without separate and explicit consent. Brief confidential practitioner notes support continuity and accurate record keeping.

Between sessions

Contact between sessions is limited to appointment arrangements and practical questions. Therapeutic reflections, artwork and personal questions are held for the next session, where they can receive proper time and attention.

Professional scope and referral

If it becomes apparent that your needs fall outside my professional scope, I will discuss this openly and, where possible, assist you to identify a practitioner or service better equipped to support you.

Provisional booking policy

Time is reserved with care.

Final cancellation conditions will be confirmed before bookings open and will reflect the requirements of the consulting venue.

  • 48 hours or more: the session may be rescheduled without charge.
  • Between 24 and 48 hours: 50% of the session fee may apply.
  • Less than 24 hours or non-attendance: the session is ordinarily non-refundable.

Exceptional circumstances may be considered individually. Unused sessions in the three-session series are refundable. If I cancel or recommend that the work should not continue, unused sessions may be rescheduled or refunded in full.

Crisis support

This is not an emergency mental-health service.

Soul Metaphors does not provide crisis intervention, and messages or enquiries are not monitored for urgent assistance.
