Archetypal & Symbolic Inquiry

Listening to what has appeared.

Some images do not leave us. A dream returns, an animal repeatedly crosses our path, or a figure appears in an artwork carrying more meaning than we can readily explain. This inquiry offers time to remain with what has appeared and discover the questions it may be asking of your life.

Who this work is for

Curiosity is reason enough.

You do not need to be in crisis or believe that something is wrong. Sometimes an image simply carries a quiet insistence and asks to be met more fully.

This reflective inquiry is available to adults who:

  • feel drawn to a compelling dream or artwork
  • repeatedly encounter a particular animal, colour, figure or landscape
  • wish to explore an archetype presently active in your life
  • sense that an image carries significance you cannot yet articulate
  • want to explore connections between personal imagery, mythology and story
  • are willing to remain with a symbol without demanding one definitive interpretation

Archetypal and Symbolic Inquiry is principally a method used within Individual Transpersonal Art Therapy. It may also be entered as a standalone, non-clinical reflective inquiry when you wish to explore one particular dream, image or recurring motif.

The approach

The meaning remains yours.

Informed by Jungian and transpersonal traditions, this work approaches imagery as potentially meaningful without assuming that it has one predetermined interpretation.

Archetypes may be understood as recurring patterns and figures within human experience. Symbols are the particular images through which such patterns may become visible: an animal, a labyrinth, a forest, a colour, a threshold or something known only to you.

I do not tell you what your dream or image means. Your own associations remain primary. My role is to listen, ask careful questions and, where appropriate, bring relevant mythological, archetypal or cultural parallels into the conversation as possibilities for deeper inquiry.

I do not want to explain the image away. I would rather continue listening to it.

The inquiry process

From encounter to return.

Conversation is central. Other processes are introduced only when they may help the inquiry move beyond the limits of words.

01

Encounter

We begin with the dream, artwork, archetype or recurring symbol that has called for your attention, listening first to your own experience of it.

02

Inquiry

Through careful questions, we explore the feelings, associations, relationships and life circumstances gathered around the image.

03

Creative response

If conversation becomes stuck, you may be invited to respond through drawing, simple movement or embodied awareness. Every invitation is optional, self-directed and non-contact.

04

Amplification

Where useful, personal meaning may be placed beside related mythological, archetypal or cultural motifs—not as an answer, but as another field of possibility.

05

Return

We gather what has emerged and consider how it may illuminate your present life, choices, relationships or spiritual path.

Drawing freely can support calm, grounding and presence, and may bring a felt sense of inner coherence or spiritual alignment. At other times, an image may unsettle before it reveals. The pace and depth of the work remain responsive to you.

What to bring

Bring what continues to call your attention.

You are welcome to bring a written dream, artwork, recurring image, meaningful object or symbol. Further preparation guidance will be provided when your session is confirmed.

A personal journal is welcome but not required. If drawing becomes part of an in-person inquiry, suitable materials will be provided. Online participants will receive a simple preparation list beforehand.

You may share a copy of your material before the session if you feel comfortable. This is optional and allows time for research into recurring motifs and the preparation of deeper questions. It is never used to determine an interpretation in advance.

Standalone inquiry options and intended fees

One encounter, held in its own right.

Each standalone inquiry is complete in itself. Another session is arranged only if you freely choose to continue.

60 minutes

$155

Focused Symbolic Inquiry

A contained exploration of one dream, image, artwork, archetype or recurring symbol.

90 minutes

$185

Extended Archetypal & Symbolic Inquiry

More time for deeper dialogue, creative response, symbolic amplification and a grounded return.

Scope and privacy

Standalone Archetypal and Symbolic Inquiry is reflective and experiential rather than psychotherapy, diagnosis or crisis support. Material shared before a session is treated confidentially and deleted afterwards unless you provide separate, explicit consent for its secure retention.
