Symbolic Cartography

Mapping the living psychic landscape.

The artwork is not the conclusion. It is the first map.

Through image-making, personal association and careful amplification, the psyche may present a landscape before its fuller meaning can be consciously articulated. The process offers a way to recognise its features without reducing them to a fixed explanation.

A sign points towards something already known. A living symbol carries more meaning than can be exhausted by a single explanation.

The first map

The landscape emerges before it is understood.

Symbolic Cartography is a person-led art process. The facilitator does not draw the map, assign its meaning or treat its features as diagnostic signs.

The maker remains the primary authority upon their own imagery. Facilitation supports attention: what stands out, what is distant, what cannot be crossed, what provides shelter, and what region remains unknown.

Transformation is identified by the participant rather than declared by the facilitator or promised as an outcome. Its value lies in what the participant recognises has been revealed, clarified, altered or made newly possible through the process.

Meaning may become clearer during the session, but it may also continue unfolding as the person lives. The process therefore belongs as much to return as it does to revelation.

01

Emergence

The landscape is allowed to appear through artmaking before a complete intellectual explanation is formed.

02

Recognition

Features, distances, pathways, boundaries, obstacles and unknown regions are noticed without being prematurely explained.

03

Personal association

The maker describes their relationship with what has appeared. Their meaning remains primary.

04

Careful amplification

Questions, embodied responses and—where useful—mythic or cultural parallels widen the field without claiming a final interpretation.

05

Integration

What has become clearer is gathered, while what remains uncertain is allowed to remain open.

06

Longitudinal return

The map is preserved and revisited so later experience can reveal changes in both the landscape and the traveller.

Two distinct containers

The same ground is not entered in the same way.

Individual work

Depth held at the person’s pace.

The map may be created, explored and revisited across several meetings. Deeper amplification is possible within an ongoing one-to-one relationship, with time for grounding and integration.

Group facilitation

Shared witness with private meaning.

Participants map around a common inquiry while retaining control over disclosure. The group witnesses without imposing interpretation, and public amplification occurs only with explicit consent and sufficient containment.

The longitudinal record

The journal keeps the earlier footprints visible.

An art journal separates what appeared then, what was understood then and what can be recognised now. It protects the original encounter from being overwritten by hindsight.

Original imageWhat emerged before explanation
Immediate associationsWhat its features meant at that time
Embodied responseSensations, emotions, impulses and resistance
QuestionsWhat opened during facilitated inquiry
Later encountersMeanings recognised months or years afterwards
Recurring motifsFeatures appearing across dreams, images and life events

Ethical ground

Amplification opens inquiry. It does not seize authority.

A developing Soul Metaphors process

A truthful map does not explain the mystery away.

Symbolic Cartography is intended to become available within individual work and through carefully bounded group workshops once its professional foundations are complete.

Acknowledgement of Country

Soul Metaphors acknowledges the First Peoples, Original Tribal Leaders, and Custodians of the lands, waters and skies where we live, work and gather. We recognise that sovereignty was never ceded, and honour the living histories, Lore, relationships and knowledge carried upon Country across generations.

We offer this acknowledgement as a commitment to relationship and responsibility: to listen carefully, to respect what is not ours to claim or carry, and to approach Country, culture and community with humility, respect and good feeling. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and to those who continue to carry culture forward.
